Today I turned 40. Amazing, I don't feel any different. I always thought I would. Other than when I eat sh*t (take a spill), it hurts more, takes longer to get up from, and the sweet after-pain lingers for days and days, I'm as excited as ever about skateboarding. In the 70's and early 80's we built wooden quarter pipes with 4 feet of vert, hit a few empty public pools while busy traffic drove by, and skated unhindered by security in public shopping centers where customers and security alike would watch and smile, rather than frown and flip middle fingers. I wonder who still skates from the old neighborhood? Wonder who is still alive for that matter. I live in the same town and skate in local parks, but since my return to the art in 2004, I have yet to bump into one of the old bros on a board. No matter. I have met many a solid individual while skateboarding that in any other venue might not give me the time of day, but at a skatepark, the connection, courtesy, and occasional kindness inspires me to be a better person. Tonight I will make sure to have three adult beverage shots. One for surviving the past, one for the blessings of the present, and one for my friends and families future. May they experience the stoke found in skateboarding... or something like it.
Here a few shots from today. A little fog and dampness was not going to stop me! Click any pic to see em big. Enjoy!
Special thanks to my brother Eric for the fine camera work.
